The two glass buildings are part of Volkswagen’s car park at its factory in wolfsburg, Germany. The Volkswagen glass factory was built in September 1998 with an investment of 220 million euros (including internal installations, production equipment and the surrounding environment). In order to let customers know and supervise all the processes of Volkswagen’s production, the factory was designed to be completely transparent and open to the public.
Each of the 20-storey, 42-metre tall cylindrical glass car towers, which can hold up to 400 new vw cars, is linked to an oval customer center, from which a car is taken by its own lift every 40 seconds.
Visitors can also ride in glass carriages and be carted to the top floor. From the top of the tower, you can see the whole park and even the whole city of wolfsburg.
The cars were built in fort worth and transported by conveyor belt directly to the underground garage of the two buildings. Robot hands at the center of the transparent building move cars from the underground garage to the exhibition center upstairs at a speed of 2 m/s.
Autostadt Car Towers has become the 2014 edition of the guinness book of world records, and its vehicle transportation technology is recognized as “the world’s fastest automatic parking system” in the “extraordinary elevator” category. The new vehicle travels at a recorded speed of 2 m/s – from the entrance of the tower to the highest parking space in one minute and 44 seconds. This makes the fully automatic high-rise parking system the fastest in the world.
